St. David's Cathedral Wales

The cathedral's hidden location in the valley helped protect it from Viking raiders who arrived by sea. Though St. David himself founded originally the church in 600 AD, the present building dates from the 12th century, with enhancements being added at various times. You have to climb down 39 steps to enter the grounds; then begin at the Gatehouse with its display on the building's history. See the 15th-century choir stalls with their original floor tiles and the Holy Trinity Chapel with intricate fan-vaulted ceiling and casket supposedly containing St. David's bones. Close by, behind the cathedral lies the ruins of 13th-century Bishop's palace. Guided tours cost $9, starting at 11:30 to 2:30.
